Your Child’s Back-To-School Success

Posted .

Traditionally, August tends to be the summer month where families squeeze in dental checkups before the busy school year takes hold. This means August is one of the busiest times for dental offices. But if you missed the August “deadline”, it’s not too late to help your child get ready for a successful school year.

September is perfect for building your child’s confidence and self-image by including a dental cleaning and checkup along with new clothes, haircut, school supplies, and backpack. Making sure your child is off to a good start will set the tone for the rest of their school experience.

Along with a healthy smile, there are several items to include on your child’s back-to-school list:

–If your child plays sports, a mouth guard to protect their pearly whites during sports, PE classes, and playground time is a wise investment.

–For a healthy smile, pack healthy lunches and snacks. If your child eats the school lunch cafeteria food, sit down with your child each week to review the school lunch menu beforehand and encourage healthy eating choices.

–If you bring your child in for a routine dental cleaning, consider protecting their teeth with fluoride treatments or dental sealants, if needed. Fluoride keeps tooth enamel strong and cavity resistant while sealants form a protective barrier on back teeth to keep out dental plaque.

–According to the ADA, toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months. They also recommend using only products that carry the ADA Seal of Acceptance to ensure that it is both safe and effective. We recommend starting the school year with a new, child-sized ADA approved toothbrush. Toothbrushes are only effective when they are not worn or frayed!
